Safety First. Every week our team participates in group safety training to ensure we stay as safe as possible on project sites!
At SERVPRO of St. Augustine, St. Augustine Beach, S. Nocatee and World Golf Village, we not only strive to provide the best possible experience for our customers when it comes to service, quality of work, and safety practices, but we want to create the same environment for our employees as well. That is why every Friday, we bring our whole team together to participate in safety training.
Our weekly safety training covers a wide range of topics from wearing proper protective gear when working in hazardous conditions and property testing PPE to ensure a proper fit, to heat safety and driving safety. We like to focus our weekly topics on what we currently have going on throughout projects, or potential hazards that could be on a job site we are actively working. This week our safety was on ladder safety, led by our restoration crew chief, Ken.
Ken went over proper ladder use by maintaining points of contact, what parts of the ladder are safe to stand on, weight restrictions, and signs to look for that could indicate that the ladder is unsafe for use. Yesterday we had a job in North St. Johns County. We performed tile demolition in an upstairs laundry room and the tile debris released a lot of dust. Before we began demolition, we contained the room off and we put containment over the air vent in the room. We do this to keep the dust and dust particles from spreading throughout the customers home. The customer made us aware that she still needs to do laundry in that room because she has several kids and she had fallen behind on her laundry. After demolition, we put the washer and dryer back into the room so she could do her laundry! Easily recognizable SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach vehicle.
Have you ever heard the cliche, "You don't get a second chance to make a good first impression!"
That's a very profound and true statement. It reminds me of a story that one of my sales managers used to tell about Ivory soap. The story went like this: A young mother with several children in tow was at one of the large warehouse stores buying things in bulk for her family. She wanted to get a large package of Ivory soap and asked the store associate if he could help her get a package off of the shelf and put it into her shopping cart. The store associate proceeded to grab a package that had a rip in the outside packaging of the bulk package, so the customer asked the associate if he could grab a different package for her. The store associate explained to the customer that all of the bars of soap were still in the package, even though it was ripped, and that she was still getting the same amount of merchandise.
The customer insisted that the store associate get her a different package that did not have the rip in it, because she did not want a package that was ripped, or one that looked like it had already been opened, regardless of the fact that the contents of the package were the same as all the rest.
So, what could this possibly have to do with SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach? I'll tell you:
Recently SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach, received a call for a water emergency at a community where 6 condominiums had been affected when a water heater flooded a 3rd floor unit and proceeded to saturate 2 units on each of the 3 floors. What a mess! The Condo association got the water flow stopped and began cleanup and extraction work in the common areas of the building, but it was up to each homeowner to contact a restoration company to get there and start the restoration process. This is where the story above connects to this situation.
As I pulled up in my easily identifiable SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach vehicle, I noticed 3 other SERVPRO Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach vehicles already on site, and four other SERVPRO associates, easily identifiable in their SERVPRO logoed shirts and khaki pants, beginning the removal and restoration process. I also noticed about an hour to two hours later, that 3 other companies showed up to attend to some of the other units that were affected, as SERVPRO was called in for just 2 of the units.
The first company that arrived, came in a fairly beat up van, with a logo on it that was very difficult to see unless you got within about 15' of it. The crew, 2 guys that got out, I immediately nicknamed the motley crew, as they looked like they had just stepped off of a mullet fishing boat or something. Hats on backwards, non-descript clothing, nothing identifying who they worked for or represented. Quite a lackluster 1st impression, to say the least.
The next group of 2 came in an easily identified vehicle, so at least I knew who they represented. But when they got out of the vehicle, one had a logoed shirt on, one did not. One had on what looked to be standard uniform type pants, the other had blue jeans on and a shirt that he had probably gotten at a concert. A little better 1st impression, but still not a complete package.
The last to pull up was a non-descript, older, white van. An older gentleman stepped out in a white t-shirt and blue jeans, and proceeded to pull out 1 beat up, white air mover, that he was taking to the 1st floor condo that had water dripping from the ceiling lights, carpets that were saturated, and drywall that was visibly wet in most of the rooms. I didn't have a favorable 1st impression, nor much confidence that this person was equipped for the job at hand.
So, what is the point of the story? Well, why it might be possible that all 4 of the companies that showed up for the water emergency were capable of handling the situation they were confronted with, the level of confidence that the 4 different companies instilled in me, strictly based on my first impression, was vastly different! Clearly, the package that SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach presented, was the only one that looked complete; and the only one that inspired confidence in me as well as the homeowner that we were working with; as she was actively trying to get the other homeowners to reevaluate their choice in companies.
And why is this 1st impression (the package) so important? Because it inspires confidence when a company pays attention to the way their vehicles look and the way their employees look.

Woolworth Department Store Sit-In of 1964
Did you know that St. Augustine is rich in Black History? From church’s to restaurant to banks, St. Augustine was a prime location for the history of the different movements that occurred within the Untied States.
Wells Fargo off Kings Street is an example of the St. Augustine history that changed many homes and lives throughout the United States.
At Wells Fargo off Kings Street, the branch continues to display their rich history to the public. It all started July 1963, where there were four College Students who choose to sit-in at, what was know as the Woolworth Department Store.
Why Woolworth? it was a popular location that African American teenagers sat-in starting from North Carolina. They would sit at the lunch counter and refuse to move. The St. Augustine movement was led by Dr. Robert Hayling. The teenagers would have gone free if they would have given up Dr. Haylin, the organizer of the sit-in, to the police after they were arrested. However out of hundreds of college students and youth that also participated, these four teenagers refused to write a statement turning over Dr. Haylin. Therefore, the judge sentenced them to 1 year of retention school which was jail to help reform the students since they refused to stop protesting.
The teens were released early due to changes made by the Governor Farris Bryant. This group of four are referred to as the “little warriors” by Dr. King, and as the “St. Augustine four” by local residence. The students were JoeAnn Anderson Ulmer, Samuel White, Audrey Nell Edwards, and Willie Carl Singleton.

Church Sanctuary
Pastor Clarence from Grace Community Church explained the horror that occurred during his flood in the fellowship Hall, as he stood for 45 minutes with his hand into a spigot to prevent further water damage. Finally help arrived when a member turned off the water valve under the sink.
The Pastor knew at that time his Father’s Day service could not be canceled, but could not see how this would be possible, since the water completely flooded the back of the church and ran 10 feet into the Sanctuary. If it was any other Sunday, he would have canceled service, but not for Father’s Day. He was told to call a company that he never heard of and prayed for a miracle hoping for the best.
Pastor Clarence Blalock concerns were set to ease when the Production manager at SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach Kenny Woodruff showed up. Within seconds, Pastor Clarence knew he hired the right company for the job. He said 30 minutes turned into 15.
Kenny and the crew worked quickly and placed equipment to help mitigate damage. They put the pastors concerns at ease. All he wanted was to surprise the father’s this Father’s Day and he is excited to have the opportunity to become “another happy customer.”

We did an unusual clean up (aren't they all?) for St John's county this week. COA bus, that typically transports handicap residents of St Augustine, was used for other type of transport. World Golf Village - SERVPRO of Greater St Augustine/St. Augustine Beach is faster to any size disaster!
While a family was away on vacation, the refrigerator stopped working, resulting in mold and bio contamination. SERVPRO of Greater St Augustine/St Augustine Beach was faster than anyone to this situation. We do not have to drive all the way from Jacksonville!
