Water leaking out from under a door Are you experiencing water damage in your St. Johns County home? You can count on the PROS at SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine to help!

Did you know that water damage is the second most frequently filed homeowners insurance claim? Water damage can come from leaky pipes, washing machine malfunctions, showers, tubs, leaky roofs, etc. The damage can be extensive, whether it's a broken pipe or a small, unnoticed leak. While water damage cannot be completely avoided in homes, there are a few actions you can take to prevent some of the more common ways that water damage can occur in your home.

1. Know Where Your Water Shut-Off Valve is

If a pipe were to suddenly burst in your St. Augustine home, it's important to know both where your main water shut-off is located, and how to shut it off to stop the flow of water.

2. Keep Your Drains Clear

Regular cleanings to keep your drains clear in your sinks showers, and tubs can aid in the prevention of water damage from clogs and water backups.

3. Inspect Your Faucets and Hoses

Check your hoses leading to your refrigeration, washing machine, and dishwasher annually to ensure there are no cracks on the line or leaks. Make sure that all faucets are completely shut off and are not leaking, especially when leaving your house for an extended period of time.

4. Check Your Showers and Tubs

Make sure the caulking around your showers and tubs is watertight and free of cracks and leaks. If you see cracks, repair the caulking, this will keep excess water from leaking onto your floor.

5. Regularly Inspect all Plumbing in Your Home

Be sure that your plumbing has no leaks, perforations, or other issues that may occasion water spillages. Replace old drain hoses from washing machines, inspect supply lines for leaks, and always periodically inspect your water heater for leaks or rust, which can indicate an impending problem. An annual inspection can save a lot of headaches down the road if a small, imperceptible problem becomes an issue that results in flooding and water damage.
