From roof leaks to natural disasters, there are many variables that could lead to your property flooding. When flooring in the home experiences prolonged exposure to moisture, it is likely that you will have questions from everything from water extraction, to carpet cleaning. Here is a helpful guide on what to do if you experience water damage to your carpets.

What To Do After Your Carpets Sustain Water Damage

Repair Any Problems
In a lot of cases, indoor flooding happens as a result of a leaky or burst pipe. You should first shut off your main water supply until help arrives. Then schedule an appointment with a professional plumber who will then locate the damaged pipes and repair them to prevent more water from flooding your floors. A leaking roof can also lead to indoor flooding, in that case, call a roofing contractor to patch or repair it prior to cleaning the floors.

Remove Water
Water extraction is crucial when it comes to mitigating flood damage to your home. In the case that the home flooding is minor, use a shop vac to remove the water from the area. Remove any furniture out of the space and relocate to a dry, well- ventilated location. Then while wearing protective glasses, gloves and a mask, mix a solution of bleach and water, and spray it onto the carpets to disinfect them. Dry the area with an industrial fan for about 48 hours.

Replace Carpeting
If you cannot remove all of the water from the area, the carpets will not dry and mold will begin to develop. Contact a professional restoration team, to perform water extraction, mold remediation, and carpet replacement to make your property dry, sanitary and safe again.
