Santa Clause is coming to town and so is a cold front across Florida's Historic Coast! This cold front is set to come through this weekend bringing several nights of cold weather this Christmas weekend, with temperatures expected to dip into the low 20s.
With dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills this weekend, stay inside if possible and bring pets indoors- if you do need to go outside, cover all exposed skin. While you and your family are staying indoors enjoying some hot chocolate and holiday films, make sure that you are using all heaters and fireplaces safely and correctly.
The peak season for house fires runs now through February as people are more likely to use heaters and other appliances to stay warm, the probability of a house fire then increases as heating and electrical issues are the leading cause of fires.
As temperatures fall it's important to remember that if you have a portable space heater, make sure that the area around it is empty and clean- you don't want anything that is flammable close to the heat source. Also, be sure to monitor your electrical breakers as people tend to overload their extension cords and devices this time of year. And as always, check your smoke detectors prior and keep a fire safety plan nearby should disaster strike.

If You Choose to Use Legal Fireworks be sure to follow the following safety tips:
- Never allow young children to handle fireworks
- Older children should use them only under close adult supervision
- Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
- Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear
- Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
- Never light them indoors
- Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person
- Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting
- Never ignite devices in a container
- Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
- Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding
- Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire
- Never use illegal fireworks.

Today, SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach would like to stop and recognize our silent heroes.
Yesterday, I heard a story that seemed like it came straight out of the scene of a superhero movie. Have you ever seen an Amber Alert and wished you could have helped?
A young teenager took that initiative over the weekend and helped save a woman who was being kidnapped. The 13 year old heard the commotions and went into action.
She threw the shutters open, and bolted outside with her cell phone in hand, and yelled at the guy to let the woman go.
Immediately, she called 911 and the St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office was promptly on the scene within minutes. Her quick thinking and actions stopped a kidnapping in progress.
In this moment we would like to let that little hero know we are thankful for her actions of selflessness and courage.

Our new marketing car is a Mini Cooper S Convertable and recently it went quite a transformation.
Our marketing team designed every single detail of the wrap. From matte color selection to SERVPRO orange stripes and we are pretty proud of the way it came out.

What a beautiful Jeep!!!
So.....SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach has grown, step by little step, and are in need of a new vehicle. As we were looking at several trucks, this beautiful 1969 Toyota Land Cruiser caught our attention!
St. Augustine Beach and St. Augustine as a whole have certain Jeep culture, there are plenty of off-road trails and there are beach areas where off road vehicles are allowed. Although this was a gas version of this particular model (diesel is more desirable) we could not resist, and you guessed it…made a video!
Here is a brief history of this awesome Jeep. The Toyota J40 is the model designation for a Toyota Land Cruiser 40 series made from 1960 until 1984 (in Brazil, where it was known as the Toyota Bandeirante, it was made from 1968 until 2001). Most 40 series Land Cruisers were built as 2-door SUVs with slightly larger dimensions than a Jeep CJ.
The model was available as the FJ40 series (with F engines) and also BJ40/41/42 (short wheelbase), BJ43/44/46 (middle wheelbase) or HJ45/47 (long wheelbase) designation where it had a Diesel engine. Land Cruisers built in Brazil from 1968 to 1993 - with Mercedes-Benz engines - received OJ40/45 (OJ50/55 from 1973) series chassis codes and those built from 1994 to 2001 - with Toyota engines - have BJ50/55 series model codes.

It simply doesn't matter where we find Water Damage or Mold Damage, we only specialize in one thing - Damage Restoration. Have Damage? Call SERVPRO!
We have shared details regarding the first part of this job (see wine cellar flood blog post) a few weeks back. Our technicians did not find any water damage as the result of the initial call, albeit they found some long term damage and possible mold contamination of one of the external walls. Obviously this is one of the family's favorite rooms and SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach is excited to get this beautiful game room back healthy!
We got caught up on most of our restoration projects over the last few weeks and finally made it back out to the "wine cellar and game room basement" house once more to establish the scope of our restoration work.

We had such great response to our first “Before and After” slideshow that we immediately decided to put together Part II, using some of the more recent projects!
When you keep going you do not quite realize how much work is being completed, but when you sit back and tally up photos, dry logs, and stories from each and every restoration project completed it is difficult to wrap your head around the volume of work completed in such a short time.
It is pretty sad that this many families in St. Augustine and surrounding areas were unfortunate to experience severe damages, albeit SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach were able to replace all the bad memories with the good!

With growth, come growing pains. SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beachopened its doors a little over six months ago and the amount of growth this SERVPRO location experienced is tremendous. As SERVPRO in St. Augustine is taking on several extensive Damage Restoration jobs the need to expand infrastructure and staff increases. is where we are began to experience the most challenges in our early quest of market domination and is the main topic of our post. We are always looking to share our experiences with our customers
In the past month we have taken on several challenging projects, ranging from full house floods to full house fires, with big and small cleanings in between. The influx of business created an immediate need to increase certified staff, or so we thought. We have had several qualified candidates lined up from prior contacts and after all offers were accepted our staff additions joined up with the rest of SERVPRO of Greater/St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach's team. Albeit, all of these additions ended up leaving or terminated before spending any considerable amount of time in their positions. Which put SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach’s staff under a great deal of pressure.
The technician hired to assist on all construction related projects embellished qualifications and based on the quality and volume of work was removed after 2 days in the position. Second technician brought in to participate on the rebuild side of the business was somewhat an improvement, although still did not meet our quality and urgency standards and was released. Finally our newly hired restoration technician who had a little over a year of industry related experience (that’s typically a lot less than what we would normally accept) received an offer from the company he began his career with and left after one week of work and calling out the next. All of that turnover put SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach under a great deal of pressure, it took a massive effort to keep up with all of the commitments and deliver quality.
It could probably take several pages to describe what kind of maneuvering it took to navigate through this attrition, all while taking on emergency Water Damage jobs, Commercial Fire Damages, and emergency cleanings in St. Augustine, Palm Coast and Daytona Beach areas. But it is time to reflect on what we have learned.
In addition to IICRC certifications the rest of our core technicians are demolition experts and are utilized on construction related projects. What we found out is that hiring technicians from other restoration companies or even other SERVPRO locations puts us at a disadvantage as these prospects usually have very limited expertise and are attached to performing processes a certain way, all while without any proof from IICRC or other related resources. This brought us to a new hiring strategy - not to bring anyone with restoration certifications or prior restoration experience and instead bring qualified individuals with extensive construction background. As construction is more involved, teaching someone how to setup air movement becomes an easy task, teaching them to do it the SEVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach way (the best way of course) becomes invaluable.
It is much easier to bring someone on with experience, but when a candidate brings sense of decency, loyalty and fairness, no IICRC certification can match that! When your goal is to dominate Damage Restoration in St. Augustine and all surrounding zip codes you cannot travel on a well paved road, you make your own highway!

We do not usually install flooring, however we have the skills to do so if needed, such as on this commercial project. Time was vital and to get a flooring contractor scheduled would take weeks. We were lucky to find a drone equipped with camera during Cyber Monday for a very reasonable price of $38. We are frugal, what can we say! But on a serious note, we will use this cheap model to learn how to fly a drone and more so - learn how to utilize a drone in Restoration. Whether it is a hard to reach area or simply an overhead on the job instructional video, we are studying ways to fully utilize modern technology and in the process improve restoration and water remediation in St. Augustine!

Locally owned/operated by a long time resident of the city and North East Florida SERVPRO of Greater St Augustine/St Augustine Beach is striving to provide top quality, friendly emergency restoration service to Old City residents, all while playing an active role in our unique community we all adore. Purchased in July of 2015 Old City location opened on 08/28/2015.

David comes to SERVPRO family of franchises with extensive experience in business management, talent development, process improvement, and quality control after spending 16 years of his professional career in the finance sector with JP Morgan Chase (14) and Bank of America (2). During the last 6 years of his career David focused on building new teams/departments on projects created as the result of the consent order issued to all financial institutions in the summer of 2009. In search of new challenges David was presented with an opportunity to open the first ever physical location for SERVPRO in St Augustine. In November of 2014 David began negotiations to acquire the territory and on August 28th 2015 SERVPRO of Greater St Augustine/St Augustine Beach opened its doors for business for the first time. We are a Premier restoration company, specializing in water and fire damage remediation and providing expertise in all specialty professional cleanup needs, such as biohazard, duct, crime scene cleanup, just to name a few. With the first ever SERVPRO location in St Augustine David set out to modernize the restoration industry in the North East Florida by adapting many of the concepts learned in corporate environment to positively influence the restoration industry in need of updating its image, customer service practices, and quality control.
